Lot 150 - September 4th 2020 Sale

JIMMY JOHNSTONE CELTIC 1967 EUROPEAN CUP FINAL MATCH WORN SHIRT Match worn shirt for "Jinky" the Celtic legend. The shirt was acquired by the Inter Milan club photographer who met Jimmy Johnstone on the Lisbon stadium pitch the day before the Final, when Celtic were practicing. He took his photo and asked if he could have his shirt after the match. Immediately after the Celtic celebrations on the pitch, Johnstone met the photographer in the dressing room, who got Johnstone to sign the photograph of him practicing in the empty stadium and received his match worn shirt.

A copy of the photo is included in the lot. In addition the photographer wanted to get the Celtic squad signatures but the only paper he had was a postcard of Lisbon. This is also included in the lot and has 15 signatures headed CELTC VITT as he spelt Celtic incorrectly. The signatures include Jimmy Johnstone, Jock Stein, John Fallon, John Hughes, Bobby Lennox, Charlie Gallagher, Willie Wallace, Bertie Auld, John Clark, Davie Cattenach, Jim Brogan, John Cushley, Joe McBride, Neil Mochan and Bobby Rooney, Physio. The shirt has a blue Umbro label on the neck. This shirt was only used twice, in the 1967 European Cup Final and 2 weeks later in the Alfredo Di Stefano Testimonial in Madrid when Celtic, the newly crowned European Champions, were the opponents.

The shirt has special stitching around the neck, which is different to any other Celtic shirt of the same era. The curator of the San Siro museum has European Cup Final shirts in the Inter Milan section which include Eusebio's shirt from the 1965 European Cup Final and 2 Celtic shirts from the 1967 Final, both of which have the blue Umbro label.

The shirt was purchased by the vendor from the photographer's son, who lives in Milan, and he has provided a letter of authenticity in Italian and English confirming how his father obtained the shirt. The son also had the shirts of Arnold Muhren, who was a substitute for Ajax in the 1972 European Cup Final against Inter plus a selection of Inter shirts from various European Cup Finals. Pictures of the shirts are included plus two pictures of Johnstone entering the field at Lisbon before the match. Shirt is in good condition for the age with very slight ageing marks. Generally good
